Travel tips

Traveling with pets can often be very stressful. However, there are tips and tricks to help your kitty during travel.

Feliway
Feliway is a feline pheromone (feline scent) that helps to reduce stress and anxiety. This product comes as a spray or a wipe. Feliway should be applied at least 15 minutes prior to putting your cat into the carrier. More information is available at https://www.feliway.com.

Carrier
I recommend leaving the carrier out at home to allow your cat to acclimate to it. You can place your cat’s favorite treats, toys, or catnip inside. Place familiar clothing or bedding with your scent inside to help calm your kitty. You can cover the carrier with a towel or blanket during travel to help your kitty feel safe. If you are traveling via airplane, be sure to check the website of your flight provider for specifications on the carrier.

Test drive
Take your cat for short test drives once they are comfortable in the carrier. You can start with 5 minutes and then slowly increase the trips. This will allow your kitty to learn that not all car trips lead to the vet! It will also allow time to make any further adjustments to your travel plans.

Consult with your veterinarian
Your veterinarian may prescribe an anxiety reducer or anti-nausea medication prior to travel.
